Private Lessons

It doesn't take long to realize that music sessions with Scotty are a little different than the typical “piano lessons” of generations past and quite a refreshing contrast from the traditional conveyor belt of students coming in one by one and processed through a standardized format that rarely deviated from a regimen of warm up exercises and sight-reading books.

From the very beginning, Scotty has endeavoring to personalize and customize each student’s course trajectory according to their highly individualized tastes and learning styles.

Although most students will eventually have a sight-reading book they will be working out of --- at their own comfortable pace --- the only thing they need at the first lesson is a blank spiral notebook and hopefully some idea of what sort of music they want to be learning.

Very early in the game the students come to the realization that they are effectively in the driver seat. Scotty generally takes two or three lessons to present the basics of scales and chords theory, in a hands-on and visual way. During these preliminaries he is also getting a good idea of the student’s skill level, interests, sense of humor, and styles of learning and communication. And almost immediately, these “nuts and bolts” of the fundamentals are reinforced by applying them to songs of the student's own choosing.

Another important thing to remember is that students in Scotty's studio are completely free to “choose their own adventure” and explore as many of the instruments available is they would like. Some folks just want to work on piano, and others may want to stick mostly to guitars, but in most cases folks have different proportions of interest spread amongst all the instruments. In any case, all students --- even the ones just exclusively playing guitar or drums --- will be presented with the most basic of keyboard fundamentals, which invariably unlock worlds of understanding on the fretboard.

One of the most exciting developments in the studio in recent years is the application of the latest recording technology for making personalized practice tracks right there on the spot for the students to have waiting in their email box at home. Gone are the days of being forced to sit with the relentless click-click-click of an impersonal metronome to keep your timing in line! Nowadays it’s a cinch for everyone to carry around their own homespun back-up band in their pocket on their smart phone.
