In order to reach kids who might not otherwise have access to all the fun programs at Madison Meadow Music, we are proud to present the “Lois M. Hackney Music Scholarship.” This fund is named after my most wonderful great-aunt who not only bequeathed me the grand piano in my studio but who was also one of my greatest inspirations growing up in both my love of music and my love of people. “Loee” was an amazing woman, and I still miss her dearly. It would put a huge shining smile on her face to know that her name was the banner of this endeavor to spread my love and knowledge of music even farther.
Recipients of the Hackney Scholarship will demonstrate both a financial need and an enthusiasm for applying what they learn in class by way of personal practice time, group rehearsals, songwriting, and a willingness to pass on what they’ve learned to others. The money for this opportunity will be raised by ongoing donations via Paypal as well as the tip jars at the “student showcases” that have been such a hit in recent years at various locations around town such as Off The Waffle, Friendly St. Cafe, the Hop Valley Tasting Room and the annual end-of-the-school-year extravaganza in the Madison Meadow behind the studio.
Another way to raise money for this venture was suggested to me by some insightful parents, and that would be to offer all students and families an opportunity to volunteer an extra $2 with every lesson payment that will be earmarked for this scholarship. A HUGE thanks to the families who have already contributed to this effort. We have raised almost a thousand dollars so far through all this efforts and have formed an ad hoc committee who will be meeting this month to determine a process by which the scholarship will be awarded. Applications for the Hackney Scholarship can be filled out here.
